About the Role
The Supervisor – Application Development leads an application development team responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software solutions that comply with IT security and regulatory standards. This role ensures effective staffing, performance management, and professional growth of team members. The position is key to prioritizing and managing project plans that impact business operations and IT architecture, fostering collaboration within the team and across departments to resolve customer issues and deliver high-quality applications.
Responsibilities
- Manage moderate to large projects involving multiple technologies and complex business functions
- Maintain communication and working relationships with management across departments
- Provide design input and oversee implementation of complex software development projects
- Guide staff on work procedures, code reviews, unit tests, security scans, and priorities
- Transfer system knowledge and coach junior team members for skill advancement
- Lead team collaboration on projects and customer issue resolution
- Determine work requirements, priorities, and resource allocation for projects
- Perform administrative duties for enterprise applications and systems
- Architect, develop, and test new applications
- Monitor individual performance and offer feedback and training to close gaps
- Mentor staff for ongoing skill development
- Conduct regular meetings with direct reports to review progress and performance
- Evaluate goals, behaviors, and skills of team members
- Participate in hiring new employees
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Knowledge of advanced IT application development principles including object-oriented programming, client-server, web, and service-oriented architecture
- Strong communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences
- Understanding of complex automated systems and project management life cycles using Agile and Waterfall methodologies
- Ability to prioritize resources effectively to meet customer needs
- Capacity to multitask and work within time constraints
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills
- Ability to establish priorities, make sound decisions, and take action
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Relationship management skills and a collaborative work style
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience or demonstrated competency
- Experience as a Team Lead on an application development team
- Minimum of 7 years in IT, with at least 5 years focused on large-scale application development and system design
- Experience managing customer requirements or demands
- Equivalent military experience may be considered
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, with MBA or Master’s Degree preferred
- Background in insurance or financial industries, especially life, disability, dental, or medical insurance
- Experience with Benefit Administration Systems
Compensation
The starting base salary range for this role is $87,000 to $162,000, varying by geographic location and candidate qualifications. Eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company and individual performance.
