Pipeline Engineer
About the Role
We are representing a client who is a leading midstream infrastructure company operating thousands of miles of pipelines that safely and reliably transport natural gas, crude oil, and CO₂ across multiple states.
As a Pipeline Engineer, you will contribute to the design, optimization, integrity management, and project support for our extensive pipeline systems. This role involves both brownfield enhancements to existing assets and support for greenfield development, including potential low-carbon initiatives. You will balance technical engineering excellence with cross-functional collaboration to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective operations and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pipeline design, route selection, and hydraulic modeling for natural gas, crude oil, and CO₂ transportation systems, including sizing, pressure analysis, and flow optimization using industry-standard methods and software.
- Support project development from conceptual and FEED stages through detailed design, construction, and commissioning, including preparation of engineering drawings, material specifications, BOMs, and as-built documentation.
- Provide technical support for pipeline integrity management programs, including risk assessments, corrosion control, inline inspection (ILI) data review, and compliance with 49 CFR 192 (gas) and 49 CFR 195 (liquids) regulations, ASME B31.4, B31.8, and related standards.
- Manage or support small-to-medium capital projects, O&M initiatives, and facility upgrades such as compressor stations, terminals, pig launchers/receivers, and measurement systems.
- Conduct hydraulic simulations, system performance analysis, and troubleshooting to maximize throughput, reliability, and efficiency while minimizing operational costs.
- Collaborate with operations, environmental, regulatory, right-of-way, and construction teams to ensure projects meet safety, environmental, and permitting requirements.
- Review and approve contractor and subcontractor deliverables, respond to RFIs, and participate in bid evaluations and material procurement.
- Prepare technical reports, cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments; present findings to stakeholders and leadership.
- Contribute to innovation efforts, such as evaluating new technologies for decarbonization, enhanced monitoring (e.g., SCADA), or system optimization.
- Travel to field locations as needed (10-25%) for site visits, inspections, construction support, or commissioning activities.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Petroleum, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
- 8+ years of relevant experience in pipeline engineering, preferably in midstream oil & gas (natural gas transmission, crude oil, or gathering systems).
- Strong knowledge of pipeline hydraulics, design fundamentals, and industry codes and standards (49 CFR 192/195, ASME B31.4/B31.8, API standards).
- Experience with hydraulic modeling software and pipeline design tools.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively on projects of moderate complexity while prioritizing safety and regulatory compliance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar tools is a plus.
Preferred:
- EIT certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain within 1–2 years).
- Experience with FERC-regulated interstate pipelines, CO₂ transportation projects, or pipeline integrity management programs.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems, rotating equipment (pumps/compressors), or project management principles.
- Background in sustainable energy initiatives or low-carbon infrastructure projects.
