Description The City of Norfolk’s Public Library is seeking candidates for a Library Associate I (Youth Services) at the Van Wyck branch library. The Library Associate I will be responsible for all Youth Services programming at the branch, including maintaining the KidZone, and assists in managing the juvenile collections.The Norfolk Public Library offers equal opportunity access to information, high quality book and multimedia materials, programs, exhibits, online resources, and technology to meet the needs of our diverse community for life-long learning, cultural enrichment, and intellectual stimulation. To fulfill its mission, the Library employs a knowledgeable, well-trained staff committed to excellent service and civility.Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $41,503Essential Functions Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Develops early literacy programs aligned with the Family Place philosophy and best practices in early childhood development
  • Maintains and monitors KidZone in the library branch; prepares book displays
  • Assists in building and maintaining the library’s juvenile and YA collections
  • Plans and promotes programs for youth and families.
  • Organizes school visits, public tours, and outreach events
  • Provides excellent customer service, provides regular coverage of public service desks, assists library patrons with reader’s advisory
  • Provides technology assistance to the public with computers, copier, and scanner.
  • Performs administrative duties and prepares statistical reports
  • Participates in committees and attends training related to the job, attends Family Place training in Long Island, NY
  • Supervises part-time employees and volunteers when branch manager is unavailable.

Education/Experience Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.One year of experience in library or related services.Experience working with children, teens, and adults in a library.Supervisory experience preferred.Additional Information & Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s license or Commercial Driver’s license may be required depending on assignment.

Work Hours: 40 hours/week.9:30 am – 6:00 pm. Monday – Friday – Some nights and weekends

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
