Highway Maintenance Worker III – Crew Leader
Job Responsibilities Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as grading dirt roads, grading roadside and outfall ditches, patching roadway as necessary and installing driveways. Operates motor-grader while grading dirt roads and roadway shoulders, operates the backhoe to clean out roadside ditch and outfall ditch as necessary. Assists in devising a schedule for work to be performed by a maintenance crew. Quantifies daily records of work performed and materials used, records in a system such as HMMS and assists with completing the maintenance requests and complaint forms. Assists in instructing crew members daily in safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum and Additional RequirementsTwo (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.
