Highway Maintenance Worker I – Small Equipment Operator
Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Performs skilled manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include regrading drainage ditches, installing driveways, or performing work on the roadway shoulder. Picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating small or medium duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Operates small duty equipment such as a Dump Truck, Roller
= 4 Tons, Tractor with Broom/Mower, Asphalt Kettle, Forklift, Brine Sprayer, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned.
There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
