Employment Type Full Time Hourly Non Exempt TemporaryPermanent Temporary Not to Exceed March 30 2027 Deadline to Apply This application will remain open until the position is filled Rate of Pay 1900 2000 per hour commensurate with experience This wage band is set and not subject to negotiation Job Purpose The Botany Field Collections Technician is responsible for assisting the Collection Manager for the Botany Seed Bank and the Invasive Species Program Manager with conducting field surveys sampling collecting and general research activities This work may occur at locations that may be remote from medical facilities and other urban infrastructure and may involve activities such as hiking camping climbing rope work such as rappelling and use of rope bridges transport via helicopter and other small aircraft working from boats ships and small craft submersible diving snorkeling scuba diving and other similar activities necessary to fulfill the objectives of the associated research activities This position is also responsible for assisting with data entry specimen imaging and processing of specimens Duties and Responsibilities Conduct field surveys to monitor for identify document and collect plant and insect specimens in designated natural areas Collect and record data accurately including GPS coordinates habitat descriptions and species abundance Maintain detailed field notes and documentation of all activities and findings Prepare specimens for identification and preservation ensuring proper labeling and storage Assists with the updating and maintenance of collection databases including managing digital image and sound files to ensure preservation of all forms of information Assist with seed bank and native plant nursery operations as needed Collaborate with team members and assist in training new staff or volunteers as needed Monitor environmental conditions of collection spaces and report any significant changes or concerns Participate in outreach and educational activities related to findings and conservation efforts Performs other duties as assigned to accomplish the goals of the Museum Qualifications Tech I High School diploma and a desire to learn science Tech II ADBABS degree in biology museum studies or related field preferred OR High School diploma AND up to 3 years of experience in field lab or related sciencemuseum work Tech III ADBABS degree in biology museum studies or related field preferred AND 5 years of experience in field lab systems management or museum studieslibrary sciences Other Requirements Minimum 1 year of experience working with the native and naturalized flora and fauna of Hawaii or a strong interest in learning about Hawaiis natural environment Strong knowledge of plant and insect identification techniques including the use of dichotomous keys preferred Previous experience with GIS technology and mapping CPR and first aid certification preferred Must have a vehicle valid drivers license and willingness to travel to various field sites Direct Reports None Working Conditions Laboratory work environment may involve exposure to fumes noxious odors and gases from the mounting and preservation media as well as dust and mold from the specimens themselves Field work may involve exposure to high altitudes and wet conditions Physical Requirements Ability to hike and traverse rugged terrain for extended periods Capability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds Disclaimer The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by incumbents assigned to this job This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the responsibilities duties and skills required The incumbent may be expected to perform other duties as assigned Federal law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodation to qualified individuals with disabilities Please contact us at hrbishopmuseumorg or 808 848 4107 if you require a reasonable accommodation to apply for a job or to perform your job Examples of reasonable accommodation include making a change to the application process or work procedures providing documents in an alternate format using a sign language interpreter or using specialized equipment Equal Opportunity Employer We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age ancestry citizenship or immigration status color disability ethnicity familial status gender identity andor expression genetic information marital status national origin race religion sex sexual orientation veteran status or any other protected status
