Facilities Operations Superintendent
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $7,500 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN TWELVE (12) MONTHS OF HIRE: $3,750 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $3,750 12-MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.The Operations Superintendent holds a critical leadership role focused on the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the facility. The position bridges technical operations, personnel management, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and strategic planning.The Operations Superintendent serves as a member of the Cogeneration Systems Management Team and is a subject matter expert for power plant operations. As such, this leadership position’s primary purpose is the operational oversight, manpower and budget planning, goal setting both short and long-term, and regulatory compliance for the generation of steam, which is used for heating, humidification, domestic hot water, sterilization and making distilled water. This leadership position is responsible for guiding the Operations Group which consists of 37 FTE made up of four teams with direct supervision of the four FTE (Shift Supervisors) guiding each team. The Operations Group works 24/7-365 days/year on a rotational schedule, to include nights, weekends and holidays to support Cogeneration Systems, which includes the Cameron Avenue Cogeneration Plant, Manning Drive Steam Plant and Landfill Gas System. Specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to: ensuring adequate staffing levels, administering the performance management program, working with human resources to ensure success of the Community College Recruitment Program, preparing monthly, quarterly and annual operational reports, develop and review operational guidelines and procedures, coordinate bi-annual outage plans with maintenance and instruments & controls groups to ensure safe and reliable supply of steam and electricity to the UNC Campus and Hospitals, as well as, working across Energy Services with other work groups within the department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Graduation from high school or equivalency and four (4) years’ experience in applicable Utility operations/maintenance, including three (3) years of supervisory experience to include formal performance management experience; or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and education.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceGraduation from high school or equivalency and four (4) years’ experience in applicable Utility operations/maintenance, including three (3) years of supervisory experience to include formal performance management experience; or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and education.Demonstrated strong knowledge of cogeneration/power plant operations: boilers, turbines, steam generation, steam distribution, and auxiliary equipment.Working knowledge of control systems (DCS, SCADA), instrumentation & controls, safety systems and ability to understand high-pressure steam systems.Working knowledge with steam turbine generators, coal/gas/oil-fired CFB boilers, gas/oil-fired package boilers, and/or a 1 MW generator and flare skid.Working knowledge of the methods, principles, practices and techniques used in operating a cogeneration and/or steam plant.Ability to prepare and maintain routine records and/or reports and present finding when requested.Ability to manage budget, purchase requisitions, and/or contractor oversight.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceIn addition to an office environment and required computer work, this position will work in varying environmental conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements (for example air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid and cold). This position may be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures.Preferred candidate will have extensive power plant operations experience in a cogeneration and/or steam facility(s).
Special Physical/Mental RequirementsThis position is responsible for the continuous operation of the power plant (24/7-365 days to include nights, weekends and holidays).This position is Severe Weather Essential and Communicable Disease/Public Health mandatory, as such the employee in this position must report to work during periods of adverse weather, other university emergency and/or a public health emergency.In addition to an office environment and required computer work, this position will work in varying environmental conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements (for example air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid and cold). Work may involve confined spaces, heights, high-temperature areas, ascend/descend stairs and/or ladders, ability to move 50 pounds minimum (with or without accommodations) and/or ability to wear ‘self-contained breathing apparatus’.This position requires: Evening work occasionally, Exposure to Hazardous Materials, Night work occasionally, Respirator, general use, Shift work occasionally, Valid NC Driver’s License, Weekend work occasionally.This position requires availability and response to operational emergencies outside normal business hours.
