Bethel AME Church is hiring a Director of Communications & Culture — a strategic and creative leader who shapes how Bethel shows up in words, visuals, experiences, and digital presence. This role strengthens internal culture, external visibility, and storytelling while building a volunteer communications ministry. You will steward the church’s communication identity, ensuring clarity, consistency, and cultural resonance across every platform and touchpoint.

What you’ll do

  • Lead Bethel’s overall communications and digital strategy across web, email, social media, and Sunday content.
  • Own Bethel’s digital presence — website updates, digital messaging, social channels, online engagement, and digital-first storytelling.
  • Lead and implement a unified communications & culture strategy aligned with Bethel’s mission and ministry priorities.
  • Ensure a consistent visual and verbal identity across all communications and materials.
  • Oversee Sunday Digital (slides, screens, service messaging) and keep Planning Center aligned.
  • Support internal communications by helping staff and ministry leaders communicate clearly and consistently.
  • Maintain Bethel’s voice across all platforms: clear, timely, culturally relevant.
  • Partner with pastors, the COO, Media Arts, and Worship & Arts to coordinate messaging.
  • Build and mentor a volunteer communications team (writers, storytellers, content creators).
  • Manage social-first content development, analytics, and platform health.
  • Coordinate photo, video, and graphic workflows with staff or contractors.
  • Serve as the quality and consistency steward for all external-facing communications.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • 4 years leading communications, digital strategy, or culture/identity work in a church, nonprofit, or mission-driven environment.
  • Excellent writing/editing and strong project management.
  • Strong understanding of digital content production workflows (photo, video, graphics).
  • Experience leading volunteers or creative teams.
  • Tools: Planning Center, Mailchimp (or similar), Canva/Adobe Express, website CMS, social management tools.

Benefits

  • Health & dental insurance, PTO holidays, 403(b) with match, hybrid schedule.

Why This Role Is Unique

For decades, Bethel has been a trusted anchor in Boston with a meaningful local, national, and global impact in faith, justice, and community leadership. Our church continues to mobilize people, shape public conversations, and serve communities through ministries that support whole-person wellbeing, spiritual formation, and creative expression. In this role, you will help carry that voice across digital and in-person touchpoints, ensuring clarity, consistency, and cultural resonance as Bethel continues its mission.
