About The Role We are seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to join our dynamic platform team at Knock. In this role, you will be instrumental in building, scaling, and maintaining the core infrastructure and services that power our platform. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of ownership and autonomy, taking responsibility for improving foundational infrastructure components to ensure reliability, security, and performance. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product engineering, to support rapid development cycles and ensure high availability of our services. As part of an engineer-led team, you will prioritize reliability and operational excellence, actively contributing to our >99.95% uptime record. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the technical direction of our platform, implement best practices, and participate in on-call rotations to maintain our service standards. Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience as a DevOps engineer or in a similar role within startup or mid-sized environments.
  • Extensive experience managing production Kubernetes clusters using infrastructure as code (Terraform, Pulumi, CloudFormation, etc.).
  • Proficiency with complex AWS deployments, including multi-account setups and VPC architectures supporting EKS.
  • Significant experience operating and scaling databases such as Aurora Postgres, MongoDB, or ClickHouse.
  • Familiarity with queue and stream technologies like SQS, Kinesis, Kafka, or similar.
  • Strong problem-solving skills focused on reliability, scalability, and performance optimization.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working in remote, distributed teams.
  • Experience troubleshooting performance issues in databases and infrastructure components.
  • Ability to develop and maintain runbooks, internal documentation, and internal tooling.
  • Comfort with adopting new tools and experimenting with AI-enhanced workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Adopt and maintain Terraform-backed EKS clusters, ensuring elastic scalability, security, and performance.
  • Deep dive into troubleshooting database performance issues, including Postgres, and develop strategies for scaling infrastructure to support 10x to 100x growth.
  • Monitor, identify, and resolve scaling issues proactively using telemetry and tracing tools such as Datadog, AWS CloudWatch, and Honeycomb.
  • Maintain and improve our high uptime record (>99.95%) by implementing robust monitoring, alerting, and failover strategies.
  • Support product engineering teams in deploying features quickly through practices like canaries, blue/green deployments, and faster cycle times.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, ensuring rapid response to outages or performance degradations.
  • Contribute to the development of internal documentation, runbooks, and best practices to elevate team standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify areas for infrastructure improvement and implement scalable solutions.
  • Experiment with and adopt AI tools to enhance operational workflows, troubleshooting, and automation.
