About The Role The University of Arizona’s Analytics and Institutional Research department is seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Analyst to join our Administrative Data team. This strategic role involves conducting high-complexity analyses, developing insightful reports, and designing business intelligence solutions to support various university functions, including planning, resource allocation, workforce management, research administration, financial assessment, budgeting, space utilization, and operational effectiveness. The Principal Data Analyst will serve as a key leader in managing and interpreting large datasets, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and guiding analytical approaches to inform institutional decision-making. The role requires a proactive individual capable of translating complex business questions into structured analytical solutions, presenting findings to senior leadership, and fostering a data-informed culture across campus. Candidates may work remotely, with considerations for state-specific employment laws, and will be integral to supporting accreditation, compliance, and strategic initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning through professional experience
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficiency in SQL and experience working with large, complex relational datasets
- Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Oracle Analytics, or Cognos
- Familiarity with integrating data from enterprise systems like PeopleSoft, Workday, or Slate
- Strong understanding of higher education reporting frameworks, including IPEDS, CDS, and accreditation requirements
- Excellent communication skills for presenting analytical insights to technical and non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage expectations, and collaborate effectively across teams
- Professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment in handling sensitive data
- Ability to mentor colleagues and foster a collaborative analytical environment
Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead analyst for assigned administrative data domains, including finance, HR, research, budgeting, and space management
- Develop and maintain comprehensive reports, dashboards, and BI solutions to support institutional planning and operational decision-making
- Provide methodological guidance on analytical approaches, data structures, and logic to team members and stakeholders
- Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify expectations, and ensure deliverables meet decision support needs
- Lead strategic analysis projects to identify patterns, evaluate performance, and generate actionable insights for institutional leaders
- Collaborate with the Administrative Data team to share expertise, coordinate efforts, and enhance analytical capabilities
- Offer informal mentorship and technical guidance to colleagues, fostering professional development
- Present analytical findings to senior leadership, explaining methodologies and implications clearly and effectively
- Support compliance with institutional reporting obligations, including state, federal, and accreditation requirements
- Conduct statistical analysis, trend exploration, and data interpretation aligned with institutional goals
- Document subject matter expertise and contribute to internal knowledge sharing, training, and process documentation
- Represent UAIR in stakeholder meetings, collaborative projects, and cross-unit initiatives to ensure analytical clarity and accuracy
- Promote responsible data stewardship, integrity, and transparency across campus
