distinguished engineer – cybersecurity engineering
about the company
brk tech is a new kind of technology organization within Berkshire Hathaway—built to empower world-class businesses with accelerated adoption of technologies and artificial intelligence at the bleeding edge of innovation. Our mission is to help operating companies evolve from technology buyers into builders by infusing tech talent in their organizations, identifying common design patterns, developing reusable reference architectures, and unlocking the power of shared intellectual property. Recognizing Berkshire’s foundational value of a decentralized model for its businesses, we operate at the intersection of that autonomy and scale—partnering deeply with subsidiaries to modernize platforms, accelerate data and AI adoption, and strengthen cyber resilience, while leveraging Berkshire’s collective strengths to forge strategic technology alliances. This is a rare opportunity to shape the technological backbone of one of the most iconic enterprises in the world, collaborating with the leaders of individual businesses.
role overview
We are seeking a Distinguished Engineer in Cybersecurity Engineering to architect and lead the next generation of intelligent, autonomous security systems across Berkshire Hathaway’s diverse portfolio. This role marks a shift from traditional defensive postures to proactive, context-aware security ecosystems powered by AI. You will design and scale security architectures that integrate agentic orchestration, adversarial AI defenses, and real-time threat intelligence—ensuring resilience in an environment where both defenders and attackers are increasingly automated.
key responsibilities
- Define and drive company-wide cybersecurity architecture, embedding Zero Trust principles across hybrid cloud, edge, and AI-driven systems
- Architect and operationalize a next-generation CyberFusion Center (CFC), evolving from traditional SIEM to an agentic, autonomous SOC using multi-agent orchestration frameworks
- Design observability-led security platforms capable of ingesting and analyzing high-volume telemetry, including AI-generated signals and traces
- Lead development of secure AI/ML lifecycle frameworks (MLOps/LLMOps), ensuring model integrity, provenance, and protection against adversarial attacks
- Implement advanced defenses against prompt injection, model inversion, and jailbreak techniques across AI-enabled applications
- Establish secure data architectures, including privacy-enhancing technologies, RAG security patterns, and enterprise-grade data lineage and auditability
- Drive intelligent vulnerability management systems that prioritize risk dynamically using AI-driven insights
- Develop predictive threat modeling capabilities, leveraging adversarial simulations and frameworks such as MITRE ATLAS to anticipate emerging attack vectors
- Secure edge and on-device AI systems, ensuring integrity of small language models and distributed inference environments
required technical expertise
- 15 years of experience in cybersecurity, distributed systems, or infrastructure engineering, with advanced degrees in cybersecurity, computer science, or related disciplines
- Deep expertise in modern security architectures, including Zero Trust, identity systems, and secure network design
- Strong experience in AI/ML security, including adversarial machine learning and secure model deployment practices
- Proficiency in building and scaling SOC platforms, SIEM/SOAR systems, and observability pipelines
- Experience with agentic orchestration frameworks and automation-driven security operations
- Expertise in data security, including encryption, privacy-enhancing technologies, and secure data pipelines
- Familiarity with hybrid cloud and edge security architectures, including securing IoT and distributed AI systems
- Strong understanding of regulatory and governance frameworks for data and AI security
leadership & impact
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior executives and technical leaders across Berkshire Hathaway subsidiaries
- Mentor and elevate senior and principal engineers—setting the bar for engineering excellence and architectural rigor
- Lead through influence, not authority—aligning diverse stakeholders around shared standards and long-term platform strategy
- Drive a shift from reactive defense to predictive, AI-driven security operations—establishing cybersecurity as a strategic enabler of innovation
- Embed security into the fabric of development and operations, ensuring that speed and safety scale together
- Anticipate and neutralize emerging threats by continuously evolving architectures to stay ahead of adversarial capabilities
This is a role for a builder, fixer, and defender—someone who understands that in the AI era, security is no longer a perimeter problem.
