head of product, programs & portfolio
about the company
brk tech is a new kind of technology organization within Berkshire Hathaway—built to empower world-class businesses with accelerated adoption of technologies and artificial intelligence at the bleeding edge of innovation. Our mission is to help operating companies evolve from technology buyers into builders by infusing tech talent in their organizations, identifying common design patterns, developing reusable reference architectures, and unlocking the power of shared intellectual property. Recognizing Berkshire’s foundational value of a decentralized model for its businesses, we operate at the intersection of that autonomy and scale—partnering deeply with subsidiaries to modernize platforms, accelerate data and AI adoption, and strengthen cyber resilience, while leveraging Berkshire’s collective strengths to forge strategic technology alliances. This is a rare opportunity to shape the technological backbone of one of the most iconic enterprises in the world, collaborating with the leaders of individual businesses.
role overview
We are seeking an experienced operator to lead product ideation, program execution, and portfolio management across BRK Tech’s expanding footprint of initiatives driving impact for BRK subsidiaries. This role is designed for a high-judgment operator who can translate strategy into action—moving seamlessly from whiteboard concepts to coordinated execution across multiple independent companies.
You will function as the connective tissue across BRK Tech initiatives: shaping 0→1 product concepts, driving structured experimentation to find product-market fit, orchestrating cross-company programs scaling for 1→n hypergrowth, and managing a dynamic portfolio of investments across domains such as AI, developer experience, omnichannel engagement, and cybersecurity. This is not a support role—it is a leadership position responsible for accelerating outcomes, imposing clarity where ambiguity exists and ensuring that high-potential ideas convert into measurable business impact.
key responsibilities
Product (0→1 & Iteration)
- Lead human-centered ideation and product discovery using frameworks such as IDEO / Stanford, school methodologies, customer journeys, Jobs to be done etc.,
- Translate ambiguous concepts into clearly defined product hypotheses, MVPs, and feature roadmaps
- Drive rapid experimentation cycles across subsidiaries to validate product-market fit and iterate quickly
- Partner with engineering, design, and business leaders to prioritize high-impact opportunities
- Develop repeatable playbooks for 0→1 product development that can be reused across the portfolio
Program (Execution & Coordination)
- Establish and run cross-company programs spanning multiple subsidiaries and technical domains
- Define operating cadences, milestones, and governance structures to ensure accountability and delivery
- Coordinate parallel initiatives (e.g., applied AI, DevEx, CX, cybersecurity) to avoid duplication and maximize leverage
- Drive cross-pollination of ideas, architectures, and learnings across teams
- Identify and operationalize inner-sourcing opportunities to accelerate execution and reuse capabilities
Portfolio (Capital Allocation & Risk Management)
- Manage a portfolio of strategic initiatives, balancing short-term wins with long-term platform investments
- Guide tradeoffs across scope, timeline, and resources to optimize ROI
- Identify risks, dependencies, and execution bottlenecks early—and drive resolution
- Build visibility into initiative performance, including progress, impact, and financial outcomes
- Support budgeting and investment decisions with structured, data-driven analysis
required technical expertise
- 15 years of experience operating at the intersection of product, engineering, and business strategy in technology-driven environments
- Advanced degree or equivalent experience to MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; MBA or equivalent experience in product strategy, operations, with a systems focus.
- Deep fluency in human-centered design and product discovery methodologies (e.g., IDEO / Stanford d.school), with demonstrated ability to convert ambiguity into validated product direction
- Strong program leadership experience, including governance, execution tracking, and cross-functional coordination at scale
- Experience managing portfolios of initiatives with budget accountability and measurable business outcomes
- Working knowledge of modern technology architectures, including AI/ML systems, cloud platforms, developer ecosystems, cybersecurity, or customer experience platforms
- Ability to engage credibly with Distinguished Engineers and senior technical leaders—driving decisions without needing to be the deepest domain expert
- Familiarity with product experimentation frameworks, A/B testing, and growth methodologies
- Strong quantitative and financial modeling skills—able to evaluate tradeoffs across cost, impact, risk, and time-to-value
- Experience translating technical initiatives into measurable business outcomes (revenue growth, efficiency gains, risk reduction)
The strongest candidates typically combine technical depth and business fluency (via dual degrees or equivalent operating experience); exceptional operators without formal credentials will be considered
leadership & impact
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior executives and technical leaders across Berkshire Hathaway subsidiaries
- Mentor and elevate senior and principal engineers—setting the bar for engineering excellence and architectural rigor
- Lead through influence, not authority—aligning diverse stakeholders around shared standards and long-term platform strategy
- Act as a force multiplier for BRK Tech leadership—translating strategy into execution across a decentralized ecosystem
- Bring structure, discipline, and accountability without introducing unnecessary friction. Create leverage by connecting teams, ideas, and capabilities that would otherwise remain siloed
- Elevate the quality and speed of decision-making across product, engineering, and investment domains. Establish repeatable operating models for product development, program execution, and portfolio management
- Drive a culture of builders—ensuring ideas are rapidly tested, refined, and scaled into meaningful business outcomes
This is a role for a rare operator—someone who is technical enough to earn the respect of engineers, commercial enough to make high-stakes tradeoffs in partnership with BRK subsidiary CXOs, and execution-driven enough to consistently turn ideas into outcomes at scale.
