About The Role The position focuses on fundamental credit research within the municipal bonds segment, particularly investment-grade securities. The role involves developing forward-looking credit opinions and conducting issuer-level risk assessments by analyzing financial, legal, economic, demographic, and political/regulatory factors. A key aspect of this role is monitoring credit, operating, and capital trends across various municipal sectors, and synthesizing complex data into clear, actionable insights. The successful candidate will build sector frameworks, perform scenario analysis, and produce well-reasoned research reports and investment recommendations. Leveraging advanced analytics, technology, and AI-enabled tools is essential to enhance research efficiency and accuracy. Collaboration across the Public Investments platform ensures that credit philosophy remains consistent and supports multi-sector strategies, fostering a cohesive approach to municipal bond investments.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess over five years of experience researching municipal bonds, preferably within a buy-side asset management firm, rating agency, or similar environment. A deep understanding of debt capital markets, municipal debt structures, and legal security features is essential. Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in municipal finance, economics, statistics, or a related field; an MBA is considered advantageous. A CFA designation or progress towards it is required, demonstrating a commitment to professional development. Strong analytical skills, especially in financial statement analysis and credit recommendation formulation, are necessary. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Investor Tools CreditScope, Bloomberg, and Blackrock Aladdin is desirable. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for articulating complex credit assessments and investment theses. The candidate should also demonstrate a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive fundamental credit analysis of municipal bond issuers, including reviewing financial statements, evaluating financial policies, and assessing management performance.
  • Lead sector-specific research initiatives, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, regulatory changes, and market developments to inform credit assessments.
  • Develop and maintain sector frameworks, incorporating scenario analysis to evaluate potential risks and opportunities.
  • Craft clear, concise, and persuasive written research reports and investment recommendations aligned with portfolio strategies.
  • Monitor credit, operating, and capital trends across key municipal sectors, synthesizing diverse data sources into actionable insights.
  • Leverage advanced analytics, data management systems, and AI-enabled tools to improve research processes and decision-making efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within the Public Investments platform to ensure consistency in credit philosophy and support multi-sector investment strategies.
  • Participate in team projects focused on enhancing research methodologies, incorporating new technologies, and adopting best practices.
  • Engage with management to identify opportunities for process improvements and technological integrations.
  • Respond promptly to internal and external requests for data, opinions, and research insights, maintaining professionalism and accuracy.
