About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Developer to join our team on a full-time, fully remote basis within the United States.
This role is focused on managing a sustainment and enhancement project for VA.gov, supporting legacy modernization efforts, and ensuring system integrity and performance. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with front-end developers, project managers, and stakeholders to develop, maintain, and improve backend systems, ensuring compliance with software standards and operational requirements. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-impact federal project, working within a team that values innovation, quality, and continuous learning.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, with 8 years of relevant experience or equivalent
- Proven experience with backend development and software engineering
- Strong experience working with databases and data management
- Familiarity with version control systems, particularly GitHub
- Excellent analytical and investigative skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Hands-on experience with Agile methodologies and Scrum processes
- Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle
- Prior experience working remotely in a team environment
- U.S. citizenship or authorized to work in the United States
Preferred qualifications include experience with VA or federal agency projects, knowledge of VA Veteran-Focused Integration Process (VIP), Jira, Confluence, and experience working within the VA.gov platform alongside OCTO. Ability to obtain and maintain a Suitability/Public Trust clearance is required.
Responsibilities
- Manage backend development activities for legacy modernization, system sustainment, and feature enhancements on VA.gov
- Assist in planning system development, deployment strategies, and ensuring adherence to software compliance standards
- Prepare operating instructions, compile documentation of program development, and analyze system capabilities to resolve technical issues
- Collaborate with front-end and back-end development teams across multiple projects to ensure seamless integration and functionality
- Maintain high standards of code quality by establishing best practices and conducting regular code reviews
- Diagnose and correct data discrepancies to ensure data integrity and accuracy
- Develop and implement new features while maintaining the integrity of existing functionalities within VA.gov tools
- Gather and document user requirements, develop user stories, and assist in creating estimates and work plans
- Support Business Analysts in preparing operational documentation, manuals, and reports on system status and maintenance
- Integrate backend systems with other applications and coordinate with system development teams for smooth operation
- Proactively communicate project status, challenges, and updates with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Participate in sprint planning, reviews, and other Agile ceremonies to ensure project deliverables meet contractual and technical specifications
- Analyze detailed system factors including input/output requirements, information flow, hardware/software needs, and alternative solutions
