This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) – Office of Mental Health, Pee Dee Mental Health Center in the ‘Roads of Independence’ (ROI) program. This program is based out of the Florence location at 607 W. Evans Street, Florence but will serve the entire four-county catchment area.The Office of Mental Health’s mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.Under general supervision, as the Counselor I, you will work with the identified communities to implement youth peer support services, youth leadership within agencies that serve young people, and youth leadership within the system of care. Provide behavior modification, peer support services, family support services, and rehabilitative psychosocial services to seriously emotionally disturbed youth, young adults, and their familied referred to Pee Dee Mental Health Services in the Roads of Independence (ROI) program. This position will require flexible hours and occasional evenings and weekends.Responsibilities for the Counselor I include:

  • Provide direct and indirect billable services to mentally ill patients within the ROI Department. Services will include peer support, groups, psychosocial rehabilitation, family support, and any other billable services deemed necessary for the continued treatment of PDMHC patients.

  • Create and implement the program development for the ROI Drop-in Center and assure it runs smoothly. Provide coaching and intervention services for program Peer Members.

  • Engage in various non-billable duties necessary for the continued treatment of patients. Such duties will include keeping up with clinical documentation, grant meetings, grant trainings, responding to patient phone calls, assisting patients with various issues pertaining to their mental health treatment (i.e. appointments, medication, etc.), responding to interagency phone calls, trainings, making appropriate referrals to outside agencies, and any other non-billable activities deemed necessary for the continued treatment of PDMHC patients.

  • Assist with the social marketing, outreach, and awareness building aspects of the project. Has active participation in data collection and assimilation for reporting outcomes as required for the Healthy Transitions Grant and the Center.

  • Adhere to all Corporate Compliance, Outcome Evaluation, Research and Continuity of Care policies and procedures. Maintain documentation of clinical services in accordance with State Center/Quality Assurance standards. Meet ethical standards of Professional Counselors as provided in South Carolina Statutes.

  • Accept assignments and if beyond his/her scope of skill appropriately discusses assignment with supervisor.

  • A high school diploma and relevant human services or social services experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required experience. Per the requirements of the SAMSHA, candidates must have been personally diagnosed with their own mental illness, have received mental health treatment, are in active recovery, and willing to share their recovery experience as appropriate.

Additional Requirements

  • Be able to meet the OMH credentialing requirements.

  • The ability to lift five (5) pounds.

  • Youth Peer Support Certification

  • One (1) year of experience in counseling and/or behavior modification programs.

  • Considerable knowledge of mental health problems of the Youth and Young Adult population.

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.
