The Assistant Academic Support Specialist intern will support the entire Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA) staff by providing professional level academic support in all areas of support offered by ASPSA.This will include duties and tasks in academic counseling, learning support, and tutor program management. These duties may include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Meet with assigned student-athletes weekly to offer academic coaching in areas of study skills, time management, monitoring eligibility standards, and developing academic support for students by designing individualized academic plans.
  • Conduct daytime and evening study sessions with individual and/or small groups of students focusing on the development of academic skills, learning strategies, and providing executive-functioning coaching.
  • Compile reports (independent study hours, tutor schedules, academic performance, academic progress reports, class schedules, weekly meeting records).
  • Assist with New Student Orientation and Summer Programming.
  • Assist with data management and processing program evaluations and assessments.
  • Assist with event management, e.g. Academic Banquet, Major Fair.
  • Complete initial and on-going training with learning specialist staff on best practices for supporting at-risk students including students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD
  • Provide accurate and timely communication and reports to learning specialist and academic counselor staff members.
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and assisting in the hiring process for new tutor hires.
  • Training, monitoring, and evaluating tutors and study hall monitors.
  • Daily record keeping and reporting of attendance, processing tutor session feedback, etc.
  • Regularly assist any staff member in need of administrative support.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including at least 2 assigned nights and weekends.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with a diverse group of students and staff.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Prior experience working with undergraduates in a university setting.
  • Interest in issues related to student-athletes’ academic progress and transition issues.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including at least 2 assigned nights and weekends.

Campus Security Authority ResponsibilitiesThis position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
