Position Summary Bluefield University is looking for an energetic, student-focused Assistant Band Director to help lead a growing college band program that boosts campus spirit and musical quality. The Assistant Band Director will support with ensemble instruction and operations (concert, pep, and small ensembles), recruitment, arranging, game-day planning, and daily administration in line with the mission of a Christ-centered liberal arts university.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with rehearsals and performances for concert band, pep band, and chamber/small ensembles.
  • Conduct sectionals; provide musical and marching feedback; support student leaders and drum majors.
  • Support drill/music preparation, arranging, and show design in collaboration with the Director of Bands.
  • Coordinate game-day logistics (equipment, uniforms, travel, field/stands setup) and supervise student staff.
  • Partner with Admissions and the Director of Bands to recruit prospective students (campus visits, auditions, outreach to high schools, clinics, honor bands).
  • Assist in planning and executing concerts, campus ceremonies, admissions events, and community appearances.
  • Collaborate with Athletics, Student Development, and University Events on performances at home athletic events and select travel dates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music (music education, performance, or related field).
  • Demonstrated experience with band instruction and ensemble leadership (collegiate, high school).
  • Strong musical conducting skills and rehearsal technique; working knowledge of marching fundamentals.
  • Organizational excellence with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and events.
  • Willingness to work evenings/weekends and travel for performances and recruiting.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of a Christ-centered university and to mentoring students.

Physical & Work Conditions

  • Ability to lift/move band equipment (up to ~40 lbs.) and stand for extended rehearsals.
  • Seasonal outdoor rehearsals and performances in varied weather.
  • Frequent evening/weekend commitments during the academic year.
