The Role


Are you looking for a place to put your innovative ideas to work? Bring your talent and experience to STERIS’ VHP Life Sciences team where you will design and develop PLC and HMI Software. You will maintain software project deliverables (cost, performance, time, quality) from inception to delivery, analyze product/system-level requirements, translate them into software specifications, and develop control and user interface solutions. You will also help establish and improve test procedures, standards and tools.

What You’ll Do


  • Work as a collaborative team member on engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with other Engineering groups, Quality, Regulatory, Marketing, etc. for project planning, analysis of product requirements, and to outline proposed test cases.
  • Lead software efforts for small development projects/initiatives.
  • Develop software project plans and schedule commitments for software deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews to identify issues and provide input to design recommendations.
  • Serve as the contact point for outside vendors and consultants.
  • Resolve defects and change requests to improve product quality and functionality.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision on routine activities
  • Develop and release software for products.
  • Travel up to 10% annual, domestic and international.

Duties – cont’d


  • Experience in development using multiple operating systems, Siemens PLC, Allen-Bradley PLC, B&R PLC, Mitsubishi PLC, Windows CE, Linux OS is preferred.
  • Knowledge of software development standards such as the IEEE series, IEC-62304, etc. is desired.
  • Experience in User Interface (UI)/Human Machine Interface (HMI) development, which may include HMI touch screens or Graphical UIs. Understanding of usability / human factors is desired.
  • Experience using configuration management (version control) and defect management tools is desired.
  • Experience in a regulated industry such as Medical, Aerospace, Automotive is desirable.

Education Degree


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering General

What You Need To Be Successful


  • Minimum one to three years of related engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated competence within a PLC program/software development organization.
  • Ability to solve engineering tasks through accurate interpretation of requirements and test results.
  • Team player with ability to work independently or within project teams with general guidance.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience performing software requirement analysis is required.
  • Experience with networked device configuration.
  • Experience with medical device development is desired and/or working in a regulated industry, which requires formalized software development processes and software risk management.

What Will Add To Your Success


  • Knowledge of PLC-based control systems and communication protocols is helpful, but STERIS will provide training.
  • Solid experience with networked PLC systems.
  • Proven experience at software development from concept through commercialization.
  • Capable of solving complex engineering problems through accurate interpretation of requirements and test results.
  • Experience performing software requirement analysis and definition. Proven skills in working with stakeholders to refine product requirements to be realized in software is desired.
  • Experience in the implementation of infrastructure and applications for Manufacturing, Installation, and Serviceability is desirable.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
