Job Description Position Summary We are seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Fire Ecologist Specialist. This position will support on-going natural hazard change analysis and adaptation planning for United States Department of Defense (DoD) installations. The candidate will be a key member of a group of interdisciplinary scientists that provide extreme weather event change analysis and resources across the DoD landscape. The Fire Ecologist will report to a Subject Matter Expert and assist with examining potential impacts of changing conditions to forest, grassland, and other natural systems. Working as a team the SME and Specialist will provide recommendations for adaptations that would address those impacts. This position will provide recommendations to inform policy regarding operational aspects of wildland fire such as prescribed burn planning and wildfire mitigation and suppression.

Brief Work Unit Description CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Apply basic fire behavior principles to environmental data
  • Run and troubleshoot existing code in R or Python
  • Draw conclusions and develop recommendations for natural resource managers (NRM) working on DoD Lands.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Forestry, Rangeland Management, Ecology, or related natural resources management field
  • Experience with ArcGIS tools such as ArcPy, ArcGIS Online, and ArcPro
  • Familiarity with climatic and ecological data and their application to fuels and vegetation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to analyze climatic and ecological data and assess wildland fire hazard

Salary Range $27.00 an hour
