Job Summary and Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY (Primary purpose of the position.)

Under the guidance of the Enterprise Chief Nurse Executive (CNE), the Vice President of Nursing Excellence (VPNEx) serves as a leader in aligning HCA Healthcare Nursing’s key strategies in elevating quality nursing care throughout HCA Healthcare and all of its entities. Responsible for aligning mission, vision, goals and direction for the nursing excellence programs in support of HCA’s nursing strategy, the VPNEx functions as a key source of nursing quality programs, including unifying Magnet and Pathways initiatives in collaboration with local programs and key stakeholders. The VPNEx will leverage nursing sensitive indicators and use analytics, NDNQI data, and national benchmarking to improve patient outcomes.

The VPNEx advances the quality of nursing care in all HCA lines of business and executes the nursing strategy in collaboration with HCA’s executive nurse leaders. Oversees the identification, development and dissemination of nursing practice resources, backed by evidence. Guides the development of nursing research, practice models and governance structures for all lines of business that impact nursing. Guides and directs activities to ensure nursing professional practice and workflow is enhanced through nursing research, innovations, quality improvement efforts and responsible use of data. The VPNEx will enhance HCA nursing’s reputation through multiple efforts and strategies in partnership with all levels of leadership, and in parallel with Galen College of Nursing’s growth and strategies. The VPNEx will assist in supporting the quality program through a matrixed structure and strong partnership to prevent harm secondary to infections and other nursing-sensitive outcomes.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Provides analysis of HCA nursing performance by synthesizing data from the Nurse Executive Dashboard and other reporting systems in partnership with the clinical analytics team.

  2. Develops and deploys strategies to improve nursing care quality.

  3. Executes nursing practice elements of HCA Healthcare’s nursing agenda.

  4. Directs projects to evaluate innovative practice strategies in collaboration with division CNEs and facility CNOs.

  5. Coordinates content development and optimization for evidence-based clinical documentation.

  6. Leads HCA Nursing Research Initiative in accordance with the nursing strategy; aligns with HCA Healthcare Research Institute and other research programs across the enterprise.

  7. Provides subject matter expertise on nursing scope of practice to all lines of business and defined clinical initiatives.

  8. Works collaboratively with CSG, and Group Operations to design and deploy programs that strengthen nursing practice.

  9. Serves as a subject matter expert on nursing sensitive outcomes in applicable realms across the enterprise.

  10. Manages employees, interns, project managers and project plans as it relates to Nursing Excellence.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (The essential responsibilities and accountabilities of this position including interactions with other departments and outside vendors, if applicable, in PRIORITY order.)

Promotes developing, operationalizing, and sustaining a strong nursing excellence program for the enterprise under the guidance of the CNE. Fosters the creation of a collaborative environment for all corporate, division and field entities, integrating leadership skills with expert knowledge.

Standards:

  1. Plan, develop and execute the Nursing Excellence vision and strategic plan for HCA Healthcare’s nursing agenda.

  2. Deliver goals, objectives and action plans in accordance with the department’s strategy while prioritizing objectives to align with strategic initiatives and budgets; keeps entity programs focused on clinical priorities.

  3. Work closely with division leaders and corporate stakeholders to implement the Nursing Excellence programs.

  4. Support the development and growth of the teams to lead Magnet and Pathway programs, Unit of Distinction program, NDNQI nursing indicators and all key processes to support the Nursing Excellence program.

  5. Oversee the development of a centralized nursing research program, nursing quality, nursing models and theories.

  6. Drive internal and external partnerships in pursuit of enterprise publications.

  7. Ensures supervisor and nursing leadership are informed of key updates on all projects and initiatives.

  1. Ultimately oversee corporate-led programs and initiatives under the Nursing Excellence model

  2. Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Management Experience:

  • 5+ years

Education

  • Masters Degree required

Other Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in a nursing, healthcare clinical or healthcare administration-related field. PhD in Nursing or DNP is highly preferred.

  • Current state license (in state requiring profession license, inclusive of compact licensure).

  • Demonstrated history of progressive leadership positions Magnet experience highly recommended
