Logistics Pharmacy Technician
Under guidance from the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, maintains the FREM Pharmacy. This includes and is not limited to ensuring security, ordering, restocking, distributing, and accountability of all schedule II-V medications. Reports to the Assistant Chief of Logistics.
This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work regardless of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.
Person(s) in this position will encounter sensitive information in the performance of their duties and is expected to maintain that information confidentially.
- Maintains a state of readiness/preparation of the FREM Pharmacy. Provides inspections and inventory audits as required per Board of Pharmacy code.
- Comprehends and makes inferences from written material, including FREM procedures manuals, Board of Pharmacy manuals, the Rappahannock EMS Council Prehospital Protocols, Virginia Office of EMS Rules and Regulations, Drug Enforcement Agency, and Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
- Drives, maintains, and operates a variety of vehicles; performs driving functions safely and efficiently.
- Performs general inspection and maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and medication dispensing machines in operable condition.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals.
- Maintains current manuals, policies/procedures, and bulletins for reference and/or review.
- Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.
- Communicates with management and coworkers to establish and maintain effective working relationships, receives technical instruction and direction, and follows orders based on this information.
- Maintains current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains an awareness of new equipment, methods, procedures, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; and continuing education activities on topics such as emergency medical services, attends, workshops and seminars as appropriate.
- Completes weekly orders or as-needed of medications.
- Stocks narcotic medication kits.
- Receives and inventories of medications from the distributor.
- Maintains inventory logs and records.
- Tracks expiration dates on medication inventory to rotate stock prior to medication expiration date.
- Prepares reports as required by code, requested by the Operational Medical Director (OMD), or any other source.
- Ensures working order of automated medication distribution machines.
- Attends the EMS Workgroup and Regional/State Pharmacy meetings as needed to stay current on pharmacy guidance.
- Follows the department chain of command when communicating at different levels.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the County and of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Management Department.
- Knowledge of Basic and Advanced Life Support medication protocols.
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department.
- Ability to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, computer operations, equipment needs, policies, etc., as they pertain to departmental operations and activities.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with co-workers, supervisors, members of the general public, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department.
- Ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
- Ability to exhibit mathematical ability to handle required medication calculations.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with computers.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
- Ability to read a variety of informational and technical documentation, charts, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
- Ability to write reports and forms with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
- Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
- Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and policies, and follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and objectives. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including emergency response codes, radio communication codes, and fire/medical terminology.
- Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, determine percentages, determine time and weight, and utilize high school-level algebra and geometry.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, tools, and equipment, such as a computer, printer, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, variety of pharmacy equipment, or telephone. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight up to 10 pounds. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard, workstation, or motor vehicle. Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight up to 20 pounds. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with job-related equipment. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using job-related office equipment and operating motor vehicles. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing – perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).
