ECS is seeking an ARPA-H Technical SETA – Diagnostic Imaging & Oculomics Specialist to work remotely .

ECS is seeking a Technical SETA – Diagnostic Imaging & Oculomics Specialist to join our team and support an ARPA-H Program Manager developing breakthrough technologies for chronic disease detection via accessible mobile platforms. We are looking for a candidate with a strong foundation in mobile software and AI/ML who possesses deep subject matter expertise in EITHER (1) Optical Imaging Hardware (sensors/miniaturization) OR (2) Oculomics Research (biomarkers/clinical utility). This is a remote position supporting a Program Manager in the Eastern Time Zone.

These SETA duties include but are not limited to :

  • Core Duties (All Candidates)

  • Provide expert guidance to a multidisciplinary team on next-generation diagnostic imaging hardware AND/OR oculomics for chronic disease detection, leveraging multimodal biomarker data fusion.

  • Advise on the development of multimodal data fusion approaches, integrating image data, biomarkers, clinical/demographic/risk factor covariates, and other relevant data streams leveraging machine learning, deep learning, and other AI/ML approaches.

  • Provide expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence to the development and validation of diagnostic algorithms and software applications.

  • Advise on software and mobile app development for digital health diagnostics, including requirements gathering and prototyping.

  • Perform market and regulatory analyses, technical due diligence, literature reviews and generate briefing documents summarizing technical topics related to imaging miniaturization, oculomics, AI/ML, multimodal data fusion, smartphone mobile app development, and chronic disease molecular diagnostics.

  • Evaluate technical proposals for scientific merit and innovation. Provide feedback, organize reviewer comments, draft recommendations and project summaries, and presentation materials.

  • Develop technical and administrative programmatic documentation on short timelines to communicate technical approach, progress, cost, schedule and risk for advanced technology development efforts.

  • Facilitate collaborations with external researchers, clinicians, and technology developers.

  • Domain-Specific Duties (For Imaging & Optics Specialists):

  • Provide subject matter expertise in imaging and optics. Experience with a focus on smartphone-based eye diagnostic technologies a plus.

  • Advise on imaging systems, including camera sensors, optical hardware miniaturization, image signal processors, and computational photography techniques.

  • Advise on techniques for objective and subjective image quality evaluation, including color accuracy, noise reduction, high dynamic range (HDR), tone mapping, and sharpness.

  • Domain-Specific Duties (For Oculomics & Clinical Specialists):

  • Recommend study designs and methodologies for evaluating the analytic validity and clinical utility of new diagnostic imaging platforms.

Salary Range: $140,000 – $210,000

Required Skills

  • Core Experience (All Candidates):

  • A PhD with 2 years, MS with 5 years, or a BA with 7 years is acceptable.

  • Experience in software and mobile app development for health or diagnostic applications.

  • Hands-on experience with machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence applied to biomedical data.

  • Team oriented with exceptional communication, writing, and organizational skills.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in multimodal data fusion (e.g., integrating image, biomarker, and clinical data).

  • Proven track record in analytic validity and clinical utility studies for diagnostic technologies.

  • Familiarity with industry leaders and disrupters in digital health diagnostics, imaging, and AI/ML.

  • Desired familiarity with federal research regulations and compliance standards.

  • Domain-Specific Expertise (required in ONE of the following areas):

  • Demonstrated expertise in imaging and optics, particularly smartphone-based diagnostic imaging.

  • Experience with oculomics research, especially in relation to chronic kidney disease, CKM syndrome, or other systemic diseases.

Desired Skills

  • Prior experience supporting ARPA-like programs (e.g., DARPA, IARPA, ARPA-E) or U.S. DoD advanced development programs desired, but not required.
