Position: PhD-Level Computational Biologist

Referral Partner: Crossing Hurdles

Type: Hourly Contract

Compensation: $65–$85/hour

Location: Remote

Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

Role Responsibilities (Training support will be provided)

  • Design biologically grounded benchmark problems with correct answers and multiple plausible distractors.
  • Identify, preprocess, and anonymize datasets from repositories such as GEO, SRA, and NCBI.
  • Subsample and structure datasets to prevent metadata inference.
  • Validate dataset solutions using bioinformatics analysis pipelines and visualizations.
  • Work within technical limits including dataset size and time constraints for each task.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, or a related field.
  • Strong experience analyzing sequencing or omics datasets (e.g., RNA-seq, WGS, mass spec).
  • Proficiency with bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, samtools, DESeq2) and formats (FASTA/FASTQ/BAM).
  • Skilled in Python, R, or bash; experience working with Jupyter notebooks.
  • Understanding of biological experiment design and common data artifacts such as batch effects.
