This position will support Electric Distribution Systems (EDS) in the distribution of electricity to the various buildings on the University campus and the UNC Hospitals. This position will work directly under the guidance of skilled power technicians. While under supervision, this position will have the opportunity to engage in preventive maintenance activities for both underground and overhead distribution systems and assist high voltage specialists in maintenance and/or replacing electrical equipment such as transformers, switches, light poles and more.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceAbility to follow directions.
Basic knowledge/experience of electricity (commercial and/or residential)
Demonstrated mechanical ability in using tools (hand tools, etc.) and/or power equipment (forklift, etc.)
Valid NC Driver’s License – opportunity to acquire NC Commercial Drivers License is possible for qualified candidates.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceAbility to read and interpret complex schematic drawings/blueprints on systems and/or equipment.
Ability to follow directions
Demonstrated knowledge/experience of the electrical trade (commercial and/or residential)
Ability to use tools specific to the electrical trade
Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in maintenance of commercial and/or residential electrical systems.
Special Physical/Mental RequirementsThis position will spend much time outdoors.Must be able to stand for extended periods of time; ability to navigate stairs; ability to climb ladders; ability to work in small, tight spaces and bend, stoop, crawl and squat to complete work; work at heights above 120 feet; good depth perception; must be able to move up to 50 lbs.; must be able to wear required PPE for the specific job, including but not limited to: appropriate uniforms, safety shoes/boots, hardhat, safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves; ability to work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines. All duties to be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.With appropriate training – ability to learn to operate a forklift, backhoe, truck-mounted hole differs/cranes, machine shop tools such as saws, drill presses, bucket truck lifts, cable splicing tools and equipment.
