About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist with a strong product sense, excellent judgment, and expertise in machine learning and statistics to advance our Curation efforts at Pinterest. In this role, you will develop models and methods to explain why certain content is promoted or not for individual Pinners, contributing to our understanding of user preferences and content relevance. You will work on pioneering zero-to-one product initiatives, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Engineering, Design, and Research. Your insights will help shape product development, enhance recommendation systems, and influence strategic decisions. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Pinterest Trends, Pinner Needs, and our recommendation ecosystem, with a focus on generating actionable insights and robust methodologies that answer the critical “why” behind content promotion and user engagement. This role offers an exciting opportunity to drive product innovation through scientific rigor and data-driven decision-making.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience analyzing large-scale data in a fast-paced, data-driven environment
• Proven ability to apply scientific methods to solve real-world problems on web-scale data
• Strong interest and experience in recommendation systems and causal inference
• Proficiency in quantitative programming languages such as Python or R
• Expertise in data manipulation and querying using SQL and Spark
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex insights to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Collaborative team player eager to partner with cross-functional teams to translate insights into actions
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field; equivalent experience considered

Responsibilities

• Develop a comprehensive understanding of Pinterest’s Curation ecosystem, including content promotion, trends, boards, and collages
• Design and implement robust frameworks combining online and offline methods to analyze recommendation outputs and user engagement
• Apply scientific rigor and advanced statistical techniques to address product challenges, ensuring insights align with user behaviors and preferences
• Partner with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers to communicate key insights and inform product development strategies
• Identify opportunities to improve recommendation quality and content relevance through data-driven insights
• Influence product strategy and metrics by providing actionable recommendations based on rigorous analysis
• Mentor junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
• Drive impact by advancing our understanding of Pinner Needs and contributing to innovative product initiatives
