Summary: SAMA’s Curatorial Department Intern will support the museum’s Associate Curator of Provenance Research with targeted projects that will give them a unique perspective into both the department’s day-to-day and long-term responsibilities. These projects include:

  • Conducting research on the historical markets for Ancient Mediterranean art
  • Compiling and organizing existing information about provenance to aid future research
  • Assisting curators with carrying out provenance due diligence

Learning Objectives/Responsibilities: By the conclusion of the internship, the intern should expect to:

  • Learn about the purpose of provenance research in a museum setting
  • Gain experience with basic methods and sources for provenance research
  • Gain knowledge of museum best practices, especially with regard to collections of ancient art and archaeological materials
  • Gain hands-on creative and administrative experience at a major non-profit arts organization

Qualifications:

  • Possesses a strong work ethic
  • Excels at working independently/within a flexible schedule
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment
  • A strong interest in the visual arts is preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)

Work Hours: Schedule is flexible and can be arranged in discussion with the supervisor.

Physical Requirements :

The physical requirements of the position described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully.

  • Walking, bending, climbing, stooping, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.
  • Physical ability to climb stairs and work in a multi-level building.

SAMA’s Curatorial department is responsible for the research, exhibition, acquisition, and stewardship of the museum collection. Each curator specializes in a dedicated area of the collection.

Since opening in 1981, the San Antonio Museum of Art has mentored and/or trained more than 1000 interns, docents, and other volunteers. Interns play an essential role at SAMA and gain valuable experience for future course study and careers in non-profit arts and administration.
