Essential Job Duties The After-Hours Supervisor provides leadership and coordination for patient care and staff operations across both the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center. These hospitals provide world-class specialty care for small and large animals, supporting a varied range of elective and emergency cases.This position ensures exceptional patient care and operational efficiency during after-hours by managing staffing distribution, workflow, and communication among veterinary technicians, assistants, clinicians, and client service teams. The role also serves as a liaison between hospital administration, departmental supervisors, and clinicians to facilitate effective coordination and continuity of care. In addition, this job requires the ability to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis, with or without reasonable accommodations.The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills, with the ability to stay composed in complex or fast-paced situations. A collaborative mindset, adaptability, and commitment to teaching and mentorship are essential to thriving in this dynamic, team-oriented, and educational environment.Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage after-hours hospital operations, ensuring appropriate staff-to-patient ratios and smooth transitions between departments.
- Act as liaison between administration, department supervisors, and clinicians to ensure efficient workflow, adherence to SOPs, and quality patient care.
- Supervise and support after-hours staff, including training, coaching, performance management, and participation in hiring and onboarding.
- Manage communication with clients, referring veterinarians (rDVMs), and internal teams to resolve care, billing, or service issues.
- Oversee after-hours funding requests, FOC program coordination, and documentation of patient care and communications.
- Maintain compliance with hospital standards, infectious disease control, OSHA, EHS, IACUC, and safety policies.
- Participate in hospital-wide improvement initiatives, training development, and readiness for inspections.

- Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the NC State Veterinary Hospital.
Qualifications Minimum Experience/EducationBachelor’s degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical veterinary setting, preferably within a teaching hospital.
- Hands-on experience with both small and large animal patients, including emergency or critical care support.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with proven ability to manage multiple priorities and resolve complex issues.
- Proficiency with veterinary hospital information systems and electronic medical records.
Required License or Certification
- Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
- Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
Valid NC Driver’s License required No
