A Vertex O Series tax consultant specializes in the implementation, configuration, and maintenance of Vertex’s O Series software, which focuses on indirect tax automation (sales and use tax, VAT, GST). These consultants help businesses integrate the Vertex O Series with their existing ERP and financial systems to ensure accurate tax calculation, compliance, and reporting.
Tasks:
- Working and Troubleshooting on the integration of Vertex O Series with Workday, CRM and Coupa(Procure to Pay)
- Configuring tax rules based on material groups or other business-specific logic within Vertex.
- Developing custom taxability drivers and tax rules as per client requirements.
- Developing Pre/post-tax Assist
- Troubleshooting tax calculation errors and data discrepancies between Vertex and the integrated ERP system.
- Creating and customizing new taxpayers (company codes) within Vertex for new projects.
- Coordinating monthly updates and performing routine testing of the Vertex system.
- Researching and resolving customer tax exemption certificate validity issues or pricing errors related to tax on sales orders.
In essence, a Vertex O Series tax consultant acts as a bridge between the technical capabilities of the software and the complex tax requirements of a business, ensuring efficient and accurate indirect tax management.Key Responsibilities:
- Implementation and Integration: Leading the deployment and integration of Vertex O Series with various ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, and other business applications. This includes ensuring seamless data flow between the Vertex tax engine and these systems.
- Configuration: Configuring the Vertex O Series software to align with a company’s specific business requirements, tax rules, and jurisdictional regulations. This involves setting up taxability rules, rates, and exemption handling.
- Customization: Tailoring the Vertex O Series to address unique and complex tax scenarios specific to the client’s industry and operations. This might involve creating custom tax rules or leveraging specific features of the software.
- Tax Rules and Content Management: Ensuring the Vertex O Series is updated with the latest tax rates, rules, and jurisdictional boundaries. This may involve applying monthly updates and performing associated tests.
- Exemption Certificate Management: Implementing and configuring features within Vertex O Series to manage customer and supplier exemption certificates, ensuring compliance and reducing tax liabilities.
- Reporting and Analysis: Developing and maintaining tax reports within Vertex O Series to provide insights into tax liabilities, compliance status, and potential audit risks. They also help clients utilize Vertex’s reporting and analysis tools for better data governance.
- Technical Support and Troubleshooting: Providing expert-level functional and technical guidance on the Vertex O Series, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the system operates smoothly.
- Upgrades and Maintenance: Managing and executing software upgrades and applying necessary patches to the Vertex O Series.
- Training: Educating client teams on how to effectively use the Vertex O Series software and its various functionalities.
- Collaboration: Working closely with finance, accounting, IT, and legal teams to ensure the Vertex O Series aligns with overall business processes and compliance requirements.
Essential Skills:
- Vertex O Series Expertise: Deep knowledge of the Vertex O Series software, including its configuration options, tax rules engine, reporting capabilities, and integration mechanisms. Certification in Vertex O Series is often preferred.
- Indirect Tax Knowledge: Strong understanding of US sales and use tax laws, VAT, GST, and other indirect tax principles across multiple jurisdictions. Knowledge of Canadian tax regulations can be a plus.
- ERP System Integration: Experience integrating Vertex O Series/Onesource/Avalara with major ERP systems such as workday, Oracle, NetSuite, etc. Understanding of financial accounting processes within these systems is crucial.
- Data Management: Proficiency in managing and maintaining customer and supplier data within Vertex, ensuring accuracy and integrity for tax calculation purposes.
- Tax Reporting: Ability to develop and utilize reporting tools within Vertex to provide meaningful insights and ensure compliance.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Strong ability to analyze complex tax scenarios, identify issues, and develop effective solutions within the Vertex environment.
