About The Role Gusto is seeking a highly experienced Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join its remote team, primarily serving candidates in the USA. In this strategic role, you will be responsible for driving the development, deployment, and optimization of scalable AI and machine learning solutions that enhance the customer experience. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders, to identify opportunities for AI integration and translate them into impactful solutions. As a leader in the organization, you will mentor and guide a team of ML scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and continuous learning. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping the technical strategy, architecture, and lifecycle management of machine learning models, ensuring they are robust, explainable, and aligned with business objectives. Qualifications
- 8+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying end-to-end ML/AI systems in industry or academia.
- Deep expertise in advanced machine learning methods, including supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP).
- Proven track record of delivering large-scale, impactful ML projects into production environments.
- Proficiency with modern ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and similar tools.
- Experience working with cloud computing platforms, including AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with familiarity with best engineering practices such as CI/CD, testing, and code review.
- Demonstrated leadership in cross-disciplinary teams, with the ability to mentor scientists and engineers effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and executive leadership.
- Educational background in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields is preferred, with a Ph.D. or Master’s degree being a plus.

- Design and develop scalable, production-grade AI and machine learning models to solve complex business problems.
- Lead and mentor teams of ML scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and business teams to identify AI opportunities and translate them into actionable solutions.
- Stay current with the latest research and advancements in AI; prototype and implement new algorithms and techniques from academia and industry.
- Oversee the validation, deployment, and lifecycle management of models, ensuring performance, robustness, and explainability.
- Guide the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for the ML/AI functions within the organization.
- Communicate findings, project roadmaps, and performance metrics effectively to executives and non-technical partners.
- Establish best practices for model monitoring, updating, and governance to ensure continuous improvement and compliance.
