Duties/Responsibilities:
- Plans, prepares, installs, and maintains piping and plumbing systems composed of various materials; systems may include pipes, pressure and vacuum gauges, pipeline filters, steam traps, and strainer valves.
- Inspects worksite to determine presence of obstructions.
- Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
- Threads pipe using threading machine.
- Assembles and installs a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded caulked, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.
- Secures pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools.
- Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meter, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping.
- Tests piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
- Welds pipe supports to structural steel members.
- Observes production machines in assigned area of manufacturing facility to detect machinery malfunctions.
- Loads, transports, and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Performs minor maintenance of cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
- Observes and complies with all safety and project rules and all company policies and procedures.
- Consults blueprints, work orders, schematics, or instructions; creates working procedure based on specifications.
- Ensure pipes meet proper specifications.
- Create pipe installation plans.
- Conduct quality control.
- Testing pipe systems to ensure safety and functionality.
- Welds, cuts, bends, threads, solders, and fits pipes.
- Attaches pipes and piping systems to walls using brackets, bracket systems, or clamps; cuts or bores holes prior to project.
- Installs various types of insulation and pipe covering; safely removes and properly discards of old coverings according to hazardous waste procedures and in accordance with EPA and OSHA requirements.
- Inspects pipes, testing for pressure and leaks; reports and/or resolves problems.
- Coordinates with manager to schedule machinery maintenance, repairs, and installation to minimize disruption to operations.
- Comply with applicable safety and building codes, regulations and best practices.
- Maintains records, including safety logs and inspection details.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency in blueprint reading and understanding technical specifications.
- Always attentive to detail and alert to ensure safety.
- Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate with coworkers.
- Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
- Ability to use a variety of tools, which may include blowtorches, saws, pipe benders, and welding torches.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing project requirements.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum three years of experience in mechanical systems.
- Knowledgeable of welding techniques, particularly FCAW, as well as soldering methods.
- Familiarity with HVAC systems and their installation requirements and a current EPA License.
- Experience piping with cooling towers and chillers equipment.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing and stretching to install and repair pipes and pipe fittings.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
- Must possess visual acuity required to inspect piping systems and read plans or blueprints.
- Prolonged periods standing and performing repetitive tasks.
- Must have manual dexterity to assemble products or machines as directed.
- Must have excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Must wear safety eye protection, gloves protection, and ear protection.
