Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans, prepares, installs, and maintains piping and plumbing systems composed of various materials; systems may include pipes, pressure and vacuum gauges, pipeline filters, steam traps, and strainer valves.
  • Inspects worksite to determine presence of obstructions.
  • Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
  • Threads pipe using threading machine.
  • Assembles and installs a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded caulked, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.
  • Secures pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools.
  • Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meter, pneumatic and hydraulic controls, and piping.
  • Tests piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
  • Welds pipe supports to structural steel members.
  • Observes production machines in assigned area of manufacturing facility to detect machinery malfunctions.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Performs minor maintenance of cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
  • Observes and complies with all safety and project rules and all company policies and procedures.
  • Consults blueprints, work orders, schematics, or instructions; creates working procedure based on specifications.
  • Ensure pipes meet proper specifications.
  • Create pipe installation plans.
  • Conduct quality control.
  • Testing pipe systems to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Welds, cuts, bends, threads, solders, and fits pipes.
  • Attaches pipes and piping systems to walls using brackets, bracket systems, or clamps; cuts or bores holes prior to project.
  • Installs various types of insulation and pipe covering; safely removes and properly discards of old coverings according to hazardous waste procedures and in accordance with EPA and OSHA requirements.
  • Inspects pipes, testing for pressure and leaks; reports and/or resolves problems.
  • Coordinates with manager to schedule machinery maintenance, repairs, and installation to minimize disruption to operations.
  • Comply with applicable safety and building codes, regulations and best practices.
  • Maintains records, including safety logs and inspection details.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in blueprint reading and understanding technical specifications.
  • Always attentive to detail and alert to ensure safety.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate with coworkers.
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints.
  • Ability to use a variety of tools, which may include blowtorches, saws, pipe benders, and welding torches.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing project requirements.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum three years of experience in mechanical systems.
  • Knowledgeable of welding techniques, particularly FCAW, as well as soldering methods.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems and their installation requirements and a current EPA License.
  • Experience piping with cooling towers and chillers equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and stretching to install and repair pipes and pipe fittings.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
  • Must possess visual acuity required to inspect piping systems and read plans or blueprints.
  • Prolonged periods standing and performing repetitive tasks.
  • Must have manual dexterity to assemble products or machines as directed.
  • Must have excellent hand-eye coordination.
  • Must wear safety eye protection, gloves protection, and ear protection.
