About The Role The Uber Global Network Infrastructure team is looking for someone with a passion in developing intelligent network infrastructures and embedding adaptive AI-driven decision-making while operating these cloud and on-prem networks. This role will combine a strong background in on-prem and cloud networking engineering and operations – and their many challenges and triumphs – and take that understanding and expertise in creating a resilient, high-performance network.

  • Design, build and operate all facets of our next-generation network solutions, to include cloud, transit, backbone and on-prem networks in a 24/7 environment that powers Uber’s business.
  • Responsible for ensuring network availability, performance and future scalability through automation.
  • Embrace cross-team collaboration. You’ll work closely with people across multiple Engineering and Business organizations to develop and implement network-based solutions that support our global growth.
  • Apply your intellectual curiosity and research new technologies; figure out their practical applications within our principles and then bring it to life in our production networks.

—- What the Candidate Will Do —-

  • Create, develop and extend automation frameworks designed to automatically deploy or modify on-prem and cloud networking primitives, auto-mitigate common network failures, and improve operational health.
  • Provide production on-prem and cloud networking support (GCP, OCI), interconnects, and VPC creation.
  • Identify and work with stakeholders to drive new production designs and deployments for POP, backbone, transit or Cloud networking.
  • Participate in a 24/7/365 global on-call rotation.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams and stakeholders for projects, new functionality, or troubleshooting operational issues.
  • Basic Qualifications —-
  • 7 years of Network engineering and operational experience in production environments with proficiency in one or more programming/scripting languages (Python, Go) for network automation and tooling.
  • Preferred Qualifications —-
  • Experience leading large-scale green or brownfield architecture, designs, and deployments for global or national enterprise or Service Providers in backbone or data center network fabrics.
  • You are passionate about leveraging software innovations to automate network management, improve network observability, and remediate problems.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages such as Go or Python with 3 years experience.
  • Proven ability to lead operational excellence through best-practice change management, outage mitigation and blameless post-mortem processes.
  • 4 years of hands-on experience designing, deploying and/or operating Cloud networking in either Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform environments (Direct peering, VPC networking, Security controls).
  • Knowledge about distributed systems such as Network/Application load balancers, DNS, VM/container networking.
  • Domain expertise in one or more of the following areas: AWS, GCP, Backbone network design and architecture, large scale on premise data center networking, network automation and observability, large scale distributed systems
  • You have great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a portfolio of successful execution. You are open-minded to discuss various technical approaches and able to drive consensus across various stakeholders at Uber.
  • A relentless desire to build each network better than the last. Treat networking, operational efficiency, and automation as sciences with room for artful breakthroughs.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$211,000 per year – USD$234,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$211,000 per year – USD$234,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
