About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Engineer to join our dynamic team in a hybrid work environment based in Baltimore, MD. This pivotal role involves designing, developing, maintaining, and optimizing complex enterprise databases, primarily focusing on PostgreSQL and MongoDB within cloud environments such as AWS. The Senior Database Engineer will play a critical role in supporting vital systems like Maryland Health Connection, ensuring data integrity, security, and high performance. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in database architecture, data modeling, ETL processes, and cloud automation, coupled with a strong understanding of health and human services data systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on mission-critical projects, influence data strategy, and contribute to the enhancement of healthcare and social service systems at a national level.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will have a minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in designing and implementing large-scale enterprise databases, including expertise in query optimization, report development, and data solutions. A minimum of four (4) years of experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and related tools such as Informatica, along with hands-on experience supporting applications in AWS cloud infrastructure, is required. The candidate should demonstrate proficiency in database administration, patch management, performance tuning, and high availability configurations. Familiarity with data migration projects, disaster recovery planning, and security hardening practices is essential. Additionally, experience with automation tools like Jenkins, Bamboo, Maven, and version control systems such as GIT and Bitbucket is necessary. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams are critical for success in this role.

Responsibilities The Senior Database Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of complex enterprise databases, data lakes, and data warehouses. This includes creating data models, schemas, and security architectures aligned with enterprise standards. The role involves administering and monitoring PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases to ensure optimal performance, high availability, and disaster recovery readiness. The engineer will design and support ETL processes to facilitate efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading, contributing to the organization’s data strategy and sharing initiatives.

Automation of database operations and cloud-based deployment in AWS is a key aspect of this role. The candidate will develop scripts, standards, and monitoring tools to ensure system reliability and performance SLAs. Troubleshooting and performance tuning are ongoing responsibilities, requiring proactive monitoring, error resolution, and debugging of database and application tiers. Implementing data quality checks, validation rules, and metadata management will be vital to uphold data governance standards, especially within health insurance marketplace systems.

Security hardening practices, including access control, OS configurations, and encryption, will be performed to safeguard sensitive data. The engineer will also design and execute data migration plans between data centers and cloud environments, supporting testing efforts such as unit, load, end-to-end, and user acceptance testing. Collaboration with developers, analysts, and stakeholders is essential to define and implement enterprise data architectures, ensuring compliance with security policies and project management methodologies.
