Requirements

Must have:

We seek a candidate with over 5 years of experience in designing and implementing production AI/ML systems. You should have at least 2 years of experience leading technical teams, ideally possessing a Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, or a related field. We expect you to have expert-level proficiency in Python and ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn. A deep understanding of large language models (LLMs), natural language processing, and generative AI is essential. Experience with cloud AI platforms (AWS, OpenAI, Azure, GCP) and MLOps practices is highly desirable. Additionally, strong knowledge of AI ethics, bias mitigation, and responsible AI principles, along with solid ethical judgment regarding AI implementation and data privacy, are crucial. You should have expertise in API design, microservices architecture, and system integration, as well as the ability to create and execute effective communication plans. We value adaptability, a willingness to learn new technologies, and outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will design and architect scalable AI/ML systems that support our services, which include natural language processing applications for client intake, translation, legal research, helpdesk inquiries, and document generation. You will architect secure and policy-compliant AI solutions to safeguard client confidentiality and uphold ethical-AI legal requirements. Leading the development of custom AI tools such as legal helpline chatbots, language translation applications, intelligent intake forms, virtual assistants, document automation systems, and intelligent case routing will be part of your duties. You will establish best practices for prompt engineering, model fine-tuning, and AI system deployment. Evaluating and integrating third-party AI tools and platforms will also be your responsibility. Additionally, you will develop APIs and integration strategies to connect AI systems with our existing case management and legal technology infrastructure. We expect you to maintain the AI technical roadmap and align AI initiatives with our strategic goals for expanding access to justice. Furthermore, you will design and implement AI governance frameworks, partner with IT, compliance, and legal teams to ensure that AI implementations meet professional responsibility standards, and present AI strategies and outcomes to senior leadership and external stakeholders. Your role will also involve creating technical documentation, architectural diagrams, and training materials for AI systems, mentoring a team of 2-3 AI and IT engineers, collaborating with legal practice areas to identify opportunities for AI integration, and managing relationships with AI vendors, cloud providers, and technology partners.

Company:

This is a part-time opportunity (approximately 10 hours a week) with availability preferred between 9 AM to 5 PM EST. The position is remote, but we highly encourage local candidates in New York City for occasional onsite meetings. We are especially interested in candidates who have experience in legal technology, public interest technology, or civic tech, as well as familiarity with legal domain concepts and terminology. Candidates with experience in document understanding and information extraction systems, multilingual NLP systems (particularly in Spanish), knowledge of privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA), and the ability to build accessible technology solutions are encouraged to apply.
