This role is ideal for a journalist who is self-starting, thrives in a fast-paced environment, has sharp editorial judgment and understands what resonates with a national audience.

This position is represented by the News Guild — NY CWA.

  • Apply strong attention to grammar, structure, facts, sourcing and tone.
  • Craft platform-centric headlines that work for search, social, partners, newsletters and homepage.
  • Make sure every story has the right reporting, outreach and context — you should know your story better than anyone else.
  • Understand TODAY’s voice and ensure each story feels smart and on-brand.

Newsroom Collaboration

  • Pitch constantly. You’re always scanning the internet and social feeds and using your own instincts and editorial compass.
  • Be active in Slack discussions, offering feedback and helping shape the day’s coverage.
  • Occasionally pursue reported features and help writers shape ideas.
  • Program content on social when needed.

Coverage Expectations

  • Work Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Work holidays as required, with comp time provided.
  • Be prepared to adjust hours or fill in for other editors when needed.
  • Support special coverage around high-priority events, like award shows and Olympics.

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with TODAY’s brand, voice and on‑air personalities.
  • A sharp sense for what’s trending online — and the ability to turn those moments into highly shareable stories.
  • Proficiency with AP style and a strong command of grammar, structure, and editorial best practices.
  • Willing and able to work holiday and special‑event coverage, as needed.
  • This position can be based out of our New York or Los Angeles office.
