LIC Journeyman Plumber KAL
Reports to the Manager, Facilities Services. Performs a variety of preventive maintenance duties, repairs, alterations, and modifications of buildings, equipment, and systems in skilled trade as a Plumber. Responds to and follows through on corrective maintenance of serious problems or conditions as reported by Facility Engineers or as instructed by supervision. Works under the supervision of the Master Plumber to maintain equipment and facilities in proper working condition in accordance with standard procedures, diagrams, or manufacturers instructions in compliance with codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by:
- Responding to calls from hospital departments, other engineering staff members and management, related to plumbing needs.
- Performing follow-up and repairs on plumbing systems and equipment and assisting in areas of electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, sterilization equipment, lights and equipment, construction, pump rebuilding, etc. as needed to meet department needs.
- Working with architects, mechanical engineers, and management staff on the review and submittal of recommendations relating to expansion, compatibility, and installation of systems and equipment involved in new structures and upgrade projects.
- Ensuring that operational manuals, drawings and procedures are current and in compliance with governing agencies in areas as assigned.
- Performing preventive maintenance, tests and inspections of systems and equipment through the utilization of applicable measurement devices, such as pyrometers and infra-red scanners for piping systems, traps, backflow preventors, etc.
Performs all functions of Facility Engineer including inspecting equipment, buildings and manually operating equipment on a daily basis by:
- Operating and monitoring systems and equipment such as Andover Energy Management Systems and computers, high pressure boilers, large commercial air conditioning systems, including centrifugal chillers, refrigeration, pneumatics, electrical, plumbing, etc.
- Troubleshooting equipment, determining type and extent of malfunction of parts or components, obtaining materials and tools, making required repairs, and testing for proper operation.
- Maintaining routine records of equipment inspections, repairs performed, requests for service, time and material expended.
- Performing job functions according to established departmental safety and operational procedures.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Keeping work areas orderly, clean, safe, and properly caring for tools, equipment and supplies.
- Providing training to Facility Engineering staff as well as other hospital employees and physicians in area of expertise.
- Completing other job related duties and projects as assigned.

- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional apprenticeship program and three to five years of related on-the-job experience at a large/complex, commercial/institutional building to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge of assigned equipment and facilities is required.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires the knowledge of complex commercial and institutional maintenance and repair procedures related to piping/plumbing systems including schedule 40 pipe, schedule 80 pipe, PVC, ABS, galvanized and black pipe of no less than 3″, “K”, “L”, and “M” copper.
- Requires the mechanical ability to perform repairs on a variety of hospital equipment using specific hand and power tools as related to plumbing trade including items such as roto-routers, pipe cutter/threader machines, quick freeze equipment, etc.
- Demonstrates and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with other personnel, hospital employees and the public.
- Requires the knowledge of shop mathematics and blueprint reading skills necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Demonstrates the analytical ability necessary to perform calculations, interpret data from diagrams, blueprints, schematics and manuals; and to diagnose and solve problems with equipment and systems.
Working Conditions
- May be exposed to conditions: due to high pressure steam, extreme water levels, electrical shock, fumes, extreme air temperatures, duct noise, asbestos, hazardous materials and gases.
- Requires considerable walking and standing for long periods of time.
Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to work on ladders, lift, walk, stand for prolonged periods of time, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
