HR Generalist

Reports To: Head of Human Resources

Location: Los Angeles County, CA (Hybrid: 3.5 days on-site per week)

Schedule: Full-Time, Flexible Hours

Industry: Regulated consumer goods / hemp

Base salary: $70,000-90,000

We are looking for an experienced HR Generalist who loves the “nuts and bolts” of Human Resources to join us in our offices in South-East LA. Reporting directly to the Head of HR, you will be the operational backbone of the department, ensuring our payroll is perfect, our compliance is ironclad, and our administration runs at high velocity.

This is not a purely theoretical or “culture-only” role; it is a role for a doer who enjoys tackling administrative workflows, organizing complex data, and ensuring the company operates smoothly. If you are a detail-obsessed professional who understands the nuances of California labor law and can navigate a fast-paced environment without getting overwhelmed, we want to meet you.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll & Benefits Administration

  • Process bi-weekly payroll ensuring 100% accuracy and timeliness (experience with Gusto is a strong plus).
  • Manage the administration of benefits programs, including open enrollment, qualifying life events, and reconciliations.
  • Handle all leave of absence (LOA) requests, ensuring compliance with FMLA, CFRA, and PDL.

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain strict compliance with federal and California state labor laws, including wage and hour regulations, meal/rest break compliance, and required postings.
  • Maintain employee files with high attention to detail and confidentiality.
  • Assist in auditing internal processes and preparing for regulatory reporting.
  • HRIS Project: Assist in the evaluation, implementation, and migration of HRIS and project management tools (experience implementing new systems is highly valued).

Onboarding & Administrative Support

  • Manage the administrative side of the employee lifecycle: drafting offer letters, processing I-9 verifications, and coordinating equipment setup.
  • Utilize project management tools (e.g., Monday.com) to track recurring HR tasks and deadlines.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and policies with speed and a customer-service mindset.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3-5+ years of HR experience, with at least 2 years specifically focused on HR operations, payroll, or compliance in the state of California.

  • Work Style: High work velocity—you can switch tasks quickly, manage a high volume of administrative work without error, and don’t get bogged down by routine. You communicate clearly and aren’t afraid to ask questions or give feedback.

  • Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with Gusto (or similar modern payroll systems) is beneficial.

  • Experience with Monday.com or similar project tracking tools is a plus.

  • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills (formulas, pivot tables) for reporting.

  • HRIS Implementation: Prior experience assisting with or leading an HRIS implementation is a significant plus.

  • Education: Completed relevant degree or certification preferred.

Why This Role?

  • Impact: You will work directly with the Head of HR, gaining exposure to high-level strategy while owning the operational execution.
  • Flexibility: Enjoy a hybrid schedule with flexible hours that respect your work-life balance.
  • Growth: We value efficiency and systems thinking—this is the perfect role for someone who wants to build and refine the HR infrastructure of a growing company.
